  • GOD'S POSTERITY

Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath (I CHRONICLES 8:13)

It is a terrible thing to pass through life without leaving any worthy mark. It is true that everyone does some activities, but mere activities are not enough. The famous American inventor and businessman, Thomas A. Edison, captured this truth thus, "Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing."

Genealogical listing, such as we have in today's text, hardly has room for any significant comment on the lives of the names listed. All that we have is a hint of their position in the family tree, names and number of their offspring. But in verses 12 and 13, the Chronicler could not gloss over the worthy legacies of two sets of people. Their deeds got attached to their names.

The sons of Elpaal built Ono and Lod and their adjoining towns while Beriah and Shema, heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, drove away the inhabitants of Gath. Gath was one of the five principal cities of Israel's long-standing enemies; the home of powerful figures like Goliath.

This is our time. Our history is still in the making. A new book of Chronicles is being compiled. Each of us has an ample chance to make a difference. The good news here is that the measuring scale is no longer about any superhuman exploits; rather, being faithful to God and, by His grace, living a holy life and impacting other people's lives positively. It is about preaching the gospel and doing things that will promote God's kingdom. The all-seeing and impartial God is keeping the record of our lives and will reward us accordingly.

To make a difference, you have to be positively different and act differently.

  • The Haastrup Story

Oba Fredrick Kumokun Adedeji Haastrup, Ajimoko 1, was the 34th Oba of Ijesha land. He was from the Bilaro royal families of Ilesha.

History has it that he was captured by the Ilorins at the age of 14 c.1820s-30s and was sold into Slavery, He was transferred from one slave market to another, finally reaching the coast where he was put on a slave ship chained to other slaves, fortunately, the ship was intercepted by the British Man O' war marines who diverted the slave ship to Sierra Leone.

In Sierra Leone, the young Kumokun met a CMS missionary by name Niels Christian Haastrup, who took a liking in him, Kumokun became his ward and was later Baptized taking the name Fredrick Haastrup. After nearly three decades, he returned home first arriving in Lagos and later in Ijeṣaland to re-establish contact with his Ijeṣa royalty.

In Lagos, he acquired large tracts of property which became known as Igbó Obį Haastrup, contracted to the present day Igbobį, at Ibeju Lekki where he cultivated Kola-nuts on a commercial scale. His business interests meant he often took ship up and down the waterways trading in dry fish and other commodities. On one of these journeys, he was instrumental in steering the vessel to safety. He described himself as steering the ship in the manner of a caucasian: Ajimọkọ bi oyinbo.

He became popular in Ijéṣaland during the Kiriji wars when he was a member of the Ekiti parapo solidarity group in Lagos. The organization supplied arms to Ijeṣa warriors who were at war with Ibadan. He was later pivotal in advising the Owá (King) during peace negotiations with the British and Ibadan that brokered the end of hostilities.

In April 1896, when he was well into his seventies, Frederick Kúmókụn Haastrup became the Owá Obokun of Ijeṣaland and took the title Ajimọkọ I (derived from his nickname: 'Ajimọkọ bi Oyinbo'), though he was the first Christian Ọba of Yoruba land. He died on September 1, 1901.

  • Reflecting on the past... Today 9/11 marks the anniversary of the North African revolution reaching Egypt, where I found myself in the midst of history at Tahir Square in Cairo.

I still remember my wise taxi driver's instincts: "My friend, this doesn't feel right. Let's leave." His words stuck with me as I witnessed the unfolding events while sipping away my Turkish Coffee at the Corner Shop.

In hindsight, revolution has rarely been the solution to societal problems. Egypt's experience is a stark reminder of this.

As I reminisce about my travels, I'm reminded of the thrill of exploration. It's time to dust off my traveling shoes and embark on new adventures but my projects...hmnnn! The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered. #travel #reflection #history #adventure @highlight

  • Jesus is Coming

But don't forget this, dear friends. . . . He isn't really being slow about his promised return, even though it sometimes seems that way. But he is waiting, for the good reason that he is not willing that any should perish, and he is giving more time for sinners to repent. 2 Peter 3:8,9 (TLB)

Many people are asking, “Where is history heading?” A careful student of the Bible will be led to see that God controls the clock of destiny. Amid the world’s confusion, God’s omnipotent hand moves, working out His unchanging plan and purpose. Jesus Christ is coming to earth again. It is Christ who is in control, and He will determine the outcome. George Whitefield, the great English evangelist, said, “I am daily waiting for the coming of the Son of God.” But he did not sit down and do nothing. He burned out his life in proclaiming the Gospel of Christ.

Father, deliver me from slothfulness, keep me quickened to deliver Your message of salvation to everyone who will listen, until that day I die or You return again.

  • Manna Without Manners

Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people? Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth... (Psalm 78:20,21)

There was this discernible recurring cycle in the history of the children of Israel. They repeatedly oscillated from rebellion to retribution, then to repentance, to reconciliation with God, and then to righteousness and back to rebel lion after they must have regained some comfort. Their relationship with God was unidirectional - they always wanted to receive from God without any corresponding faith, loyalty and devotion to Him.

As revealed in today's text, God did several wonders amidst the children of Israel that should have made them believe that He could do all things. But rather than praising God, they kept asking for more and tempting Him until they provoked Him to anger. This narrative concerning the children of Israel is an evidence that what God does in man is far more important than what He does for him. What God does for man, such as the provision of food, clothing, shelter, etc., are mere transient physical blessings which are not bad in themselves. But what He does in man such as the circumcision of the heart and crucifixion of the flesh are spiritual and rewardable blessings with great eternal benefits. If they had been circumcised in the heart (Deuteronomy 30:6), they would have been more patient, contented and grateful to God for His blessings and would have escaped His judgment.

This account of the Israelites was repeated by Apostle Paul in 1Corinthians 10:1-12, and there are several lessons to draw from this. First, physical blessings do not necessarily mean that a person is spiritual. Second, no matter what  God does for a man, if nothing is done to change his sinful nature, that man will always rebel against Him. Third, spiritual blessings are more valuable than physical blessings. Therefore, "seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

  • DELIVERANCE THROUGH PRAYER

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye
may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16

If children of God would take time to study the Word of God and pay great attention to His person, ways, attributes and commandments, the world would be a much better place. Prayers will be answered quickly and Christians will revel in the glory and favour of God. We will partially know the reason(s) behind God’s actions and what to do at any time to move His hands in our favour. By the grace of God, anyone that is conversant with the History and development of the Redeemed Christian Church of God will agree, without any doubt that God has constantly revealed His mind to us in the place of prayer. May His name be praised forevermore in Jesus’ name.

A careful study of the story of Hezekiah in Isaiah 36-38 reveals two important factors that lead to God’s deliverance through prayer. The first is recorded in Isaiah 37:20, where Hezekiah asks God to deliver Israel for His own sake and not theirs: “Save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord” Isaiah 37:20

God responded by saving them for His glory. There is no greater and stronger foundation for our salvation than this. It is by His grace and it is accessible to all human beings without any qualification. It is open to the poor as well as the rich; it is open to men and women of all ages, race and background. Not because we deserve it, but to show that God is a merciful God who delights in showering blessings on His children.

The second factor is found in the same story. Hezekiah first prayed for Jerusalem’s existence that was being threatened and God graciously answered and saved Jerusalem, again he prayed for mercy and elongation of his own life and God answered too. In both cases, God’s deliverance came in direct response to a humble and desperate prayer. God will always respond to the desperate requests of His children because Jesus is our sinless high priest who makes it possible for us to approach the throne of grace with confidence.

The New Testament reveals a similar pattern in the book of Acts 12:1-8; “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” Acts 12:5. The Lord answered the prayer of the Church with the miraculous deliverance of Peter. Here again, God answers the desperate prayer of His people for the glory of His Name. I therefore decree, as you make your request known to God this day, He will answer you by fire with signs following in Jesus’ Name.

Father, please don't let me ever suffer any kind of defeat in Jesus' name.
