• T*The Need for a More Humane Society in Nigeria*

    Dr. Tokunbo Akeredolu-Ale (PhD DBA)

Nigeria, often referred to as the "Giant of Africa," is a nation with immense potential and a rich cultural heritage. However, it faces numerous challenges on its path to becoming a more humane society. To understand the need for this transformation, we must examine key areas where Nigeria can strive for improvement.

    1. **Human Rights**: One of the most pressing issues is the violation of human rights. Incidents of police brutality, extrajudicial killings, and arbitrary detentions have sparked outrage both domestically and internationally. The #EndSARS protests in 2020 shed light on these problems. Nigeria must prioritize reforms in its law enforcement agencies to ensure the protection of citizens' rights and end impunity.

    2. **Corruption**: Corruption remains a significant obstacle to Nigeria's development. Rampant corruption affects all aspects of society, from healthcare to education, and undermines trust in government institutions. A more humane society requires robust anti-corruption measures, transparency, and accountability at all levels of governance.

    3. **Education**: Access to quality education is a fundamental right, yet millions of Nigerian children still lack proper schooling. Many schools are underfunded and poorly equipped, leading to a subpar education system. To build a more humane society, Nigeria must invest in education, prioritize teacher training, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive.

    4. **Healthcare**: Access to adequate healthcare is a basic human need. Unfortunately, Nigeria's healthcare system faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of medical professionals. To create a more humane society, the government must allocate more resources to healthcare, improve facilities, and ensure affordable healthcare services for all citizens.

    5. **Unemployment**: High youth unemployment rates are a significant concern. Many young Nigerians struggle to find meaningful employment opportunities, leading to frustration and disillusionment. Addressing this issue involves promoting entrepreneurship, investing in vocational training, and creating an enabling environment for job creation.

    6. **Poverty**: Poverty remains a widespread problem in Nigeria, with millions living below the poverty line. A more humane society requires effective poverty alleviation programs, social safety nets, and economic policies that prioritize equitable wealth distribution.

    7. **Infrastructure**: Nigeria's infrastructure is often inadequate, hindering economic development and citizens' daily lives. The government must invest in critical infrastructure projects, such as roads, electricity, and public transportation, to enhance the quality of life for its citizens.

    8. **Unity and Diversity**: Nigeria is a diverse nation with various ethnicities, religions, and cultures. To build a more humane society, it's crucial to foster unity and celebrate this diversity while promoting tolerance and understanding among different groups.

    9. **Women's Rights**: Gender inequality persists in Nigeria, affecting women's access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Empowering women through policies that promote gender equality is essential for a more humane society.

    10. **Environmental Sustainability**: Nigeria faces environmental challenges, including deforestation, pollution, and climate change impacts. Protecting the environment and adopting sustainable practices is vital for the well-being of future generations.

In conclusion, Nigeria has the potential to become a more humane society where the rights and well-being of all citizens are respected and protected. Achieving this transformation requires a collective effort from government, civil society, and individuals. By addressing these pressing issues, Nigeria can unlock its full potential and fulfill its promise as the "Giant of Africa."

  • So on the bus today, someone brought out a real iPhone 14 pro max and was offering to sell it to my friend for 75k last. He said his mother was in the hospital and they needed 75k for the surgery which was why he needed the exact amount.

Since he mentioned 75k, my friend started pricing it for 50k.

    To buy was hungrying him.

    I collected it and checked.

Everything is working fine. The screen of the phone had the seller's picture as Screen saver.

I told my friend that the phone could be stolen.

He said even though it is, he would flash it and change the casing or resell it immediately.

That is how my friend paid o.

    Through transfer.

    Despite my warning.

I was just holding the phone and looking at it in shock.

At a point I wished it was me that bought it.

    But kai.

    50k for iPhone?

    No na.

No amount of desperation would make me sell for 50k.

We alighted from the bus and waved at the man who said he was rushing to the hospital to begin the process of the surgery with the money.

My friend and I sat down under a tree to look at the phone he had bought again.

While #pressing the phone, it turned off.

The screen could not turn on again.

We felt it was battery so we decided to find a place to charge it.

Suddenly, the screen turned on again.

We started seeing the screen showing.

    "Searching..."

The search icon stayed for like 2 minutes rotating like planet Earth.

    Then it switched to.

    "Tracking... Tracking... Tracking..."

I was the one holding the phone at that moment.

I quickly gave my friend his phone to hold first.

    He didn't collect it again.

He said I should hold it.

I didn't understand anymore. So I shouted at him.

    "Bros collect your phone na."

"Shey you dey hold am. Just dey hold am de go na. Make e track finish."

    "Track who?"

    "The thing e dey track?"

"Which thing? Oga hold your phone."

"Calm down na. We no know wetin e the track. Shey I dey here na. Hold am. Maybe e dey track network?"

"Hiaaann... Let it continue tracking network in your hand abeg. Hold your phone biko."

I shoved the phone in his pocket and continued began to walk home.

Suddenly from behind my friend shouted and ran past me.

    I joined him to run.

While running I was asking him.

    "Kelechi? Why are you running?"

    Kelechi shouted back.

    "The phone show location found."

    "Which location?"

"I no know o. Maybe na our location."

I was still running right with Kelechi when I saw that he was running with the phone in his hand.

I turned back silently and started running left.

    Left was a bush.

    I didn't mind.

I kept following it and running for my life.

Only for me to turn back and see Kelechi following me behind with the phone still in his hand.
    ……………

I dunno who wrote this as I copied from Amy George

  • Hello all,

it pleases me to announce that we have achieved the set goal for the 8th week much earlier than expected. The following features are now a part of ìtàkùn

Post As Anonymous means to share and interact with content and information without revealing your real identity or profile. Some people may choose to do this for various reasons, such as protecting their privacy, expressing their opinions freely, or avoiding harassment or discrimination. i will talk more about this later independently...

Coloured Post is a type of post that uses different colours to attract attention, convey emotions, or express creativity. Our coloured post can be made with various tools and methods, such as using filters, stickers, backgrounds, gradients, or text effects.

Online Status, another feature on itakun that indicates whether a user is currently active, available, or online. It reflect through different symbols, such as a green dot which indicate online state etc. This module will be most effective and valuable when the chat module is implemented. However, i will still talk more about it later independently.

Daytime Messages are messages that reflect on your dashboard immediately after the "expression textarea" during the day, usually between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the local time zone of the user. It basically help to brighten the user's day or bring message of hope, greetings and sometimes deep introspection. Just like others above, i will share more on this feature later.

The last on the list is Trending Hashtags. These are popular or widely used on social media platforms at a given time. They usually reflect the current topics, events, or interests of the users and the public. Trending hashtags can also help brands and marketers to increase their visibility, engagement, and reach on social media, by aligning their content with the interests and needs of their audience. Can we Trend #itakun or #ìtàkùn

Anyways, i will be doing more independently on each features before the week runs out. The remaining on the list to be achieved now is dependent on the Users.

We have done our part. It's time to use the # to Trend your Topics, enjoy the beauty of the Daytime Messages, when you see your friend status as online, colour your post to let your friends enjoy your message or be anonymous to express your feelings. It's a beautiful feeling to climb the ladder one step up again.
