Exodus 32:26 Being on the wrong side of life is very dangerous. Many things go wrong when you are not in the right place. My prayer for someone using this devotional is that you will never be on the wrong side of life in Jesus’ name. And if you are on the wrong side already, may the Lord move you to the right side of life in Jesus name. In the Bible reading for today, we need about the disciples’ encounter with the resurrected Jesus at the sea of Tiberias. They toiled throughout the night and caught nothing. When Jesus came to them, they did not recognize Him. Jesus teased them and asked “Children, have ye any meat?” The answer was obviously negative. When you are not where you should be, you are on the wrong side and this can bring untold sorrow and lack. The compassionate Jesus then issued a directive that they should throw their net on the “right side” of the ship for a catch. Amazingly, they caught a multitude of fishes. One lesson we must learn from this story is that every child of God must find out which is the right side to be. In Genesis, we read about the wrong side Lot went to when he separated himself from Abraham. “And Lot lifted up his eyes, and behold all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.” Genesis 13:10-11 Lot greedily chose the land that seemed good for his flock without considering his elder uncle who gave him the option to choose first. Unfortunately, it was the wrong side; it was a place that was marked for destruction, after Lot had become “successful”, the iniquity of that land brought total destruction upon it and Lot took nothing out of the land. As a matter of fact, he lost his wife in the land. “Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. Now far back in history, the children of Israel in the days of Prophet Micah failed to follow God's precepts on land inheritance. The Lord knew the destructive consequences of dispute over land, so He had divided portions of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. His perfect plan would not make room for any encroachment as no tribe or family was without inheritance. Even the daughters of Zelophehad who were first denied land possession because their father had no male child had the decision reversed by God. However, several centuries later, Israel set aside God's laws on land possession. A rich and powerful class emerged that applied force to seize the property of the poor. These people had no other business than to plot evil from dawn to dusk. God would not stand indifferent. So in verse 3, He pronounced woe upon the perpetrators of evil, oppression and land-grabbers. Man cannot get away with disobedience to God. There may be a deceptive lull blinding the perpetrator from perceiving the looming danger. Yet, unless the sinner repents, he cannot escape the full weight of the sentence and eternal perdition. God is always waiting for that crucial moment of godly sorrow on the part of the wicked. It is not an endless wait, though. One day the door of mercy shall be shut and the Lord shall say to the tardy and the negligent: "...I know you not whence ye are; depart from me..." (Luke 13:27). This song stresses the need to be undaunted during distress and trouble and demonstrate positive attitude of courage and hope. Our text has relevant interpretation for those who are passing through problems today; that reliance on God will bring restoration of whatever has been lost or damaged. Though the Psalmist realized the undesirable state of Jerusalem and even foresaw its future devastation, he was hopeful that one day there would be restoration of Zion into its former glory and of its attaining a more desirable state. Rather than succumb to melancholy, he resorted to prayer and positive confession. To find oneself in an undesirable situation is not new in life. Yet, our attitude at such times is what matters most. The Psalmist confessed that there would be restoration for Zion as God would favour her. He knew that the wall of Jerusalem would be broken down, the city would be devastated by the enemy and people of the land taken into captivity. In spite of these, he was hopeful that the time of restoration shall come. God understands what you are passing through this time. Never allow worry a place in your heart. It may appear there is no job today; job will come tomorrow. You may have married and no children yet. Remember it is God who gives children, and in Him you must trust. Whatever the challenges you are facing, why not cast your burden upon Jesus so that there will be restoration? Nothing pertaining to us is hidden from God.
