Dealing With Troublous Times Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me (John 14:1) When a military complex rumbled with explosives in Lagos, Nigeria, several years ago, the tragedy recorded more deaths several kilometres away than at the epicenter of the disaster. Thousands who heard the thunderous blasts were troubled and fled in panic, with hundreds meeting their end in a deep canal, covered by hyacinth. Our Lord Jesus Christ understands what awaits a perturbed mind. It is worse with spiritual matters. The heart wracked by apprehension and guilt is home to the devil. Satan assaults such with a whirlwind of destructive ideas that send the heart to directions opposite of God’s desires and purposes. In the midst of vast and unprecedented technological and scientific breakthroughs, the human race is yet ill at ease. There are high and low intensity wars by terrorists making mockery of the arsenals of peaceful nations. Homes are disintegrating with a depravity called LGBT (short for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). Violence and killings are the staple of the news media. All these are symptomatic of a troubled world. Rebellious man caused it through the rejection of the plan of God. But Jesus, “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” has offered the all-time panacea. In our reading today, He is assuring mankind that true and lasting peace is with Him. He promises a satisfying abode for those who receive Him as Saviour and Lord, declaring that He has prepared mansions for us in His Father’s Kingdom. The way out for troubled man is to forsake the human-inspired solutions to the universal crises and embrace God’s programme of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Do Not Be Afraid ..an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Joseph, son of David, the angel said, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:20, NLT) Have you ever felt overwhelmed or even afraid of what God has called you to do? Joseph had planned to take Mary as his wife, but when he found out she was pregnant, he didn’t know what to think. He was afraid that he might be making a mistake because things didn’t turn out the way he planned, but God sent an angel in a dream to reassure Joseph that he was on the right path. Today let me reassure you that God knows right where you are, and He knows how to get you where you need to be. Even when things don’t go the way you planned, His hand is on you. Do not be afraid. WHOSE VOICE? And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, this is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21 Children of God who are not sensitive in these last days will have themselves to blame. You have to be prayerful, careful and sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, particularly because there are mixed multitudes all around the Church today. There are even churches that belong to Satan but have the appearance of belonging to Jesus Christ. There are also demonic agents prowling around and deceiving people. If you are not very watchful, you will become one of their victims. That will not be your portion in Jesus’ Name. Although God wants His children to hear from Him and get His best, one factor inhibiting this is the fact that they have idols in their hearts which prevent them from hearing from Him clearly. You can be seeking God’s face for direction but also be hoarding idols in your heart. If you really want the Almighty God to guide you, you have to eradicate all forms of idols from your life. There are many single in the Body of Christ today who are not yet married even though they are of age. Some of them have allowed idols in their hearts for so long a time that they have not been able to look in the direction God is leading them to. For a user of this devotional trusting God for a marriage partner, the Lord will direct your steps in Jesus’ Name. You can never get anything better than what God has in store for you. You will observe that after the Lord made Eve out of Adam, Adam had no difficulty recognising his wife (Genesis 2:22-23). Once your spirit man is highly sensitive, you will always receive God’s signals on the right thing to do each time. (Isaiah 42:16) There are many homes experiencing frustration today. It is because they have not allowed the voice of God to speak to them. God has spoken, but they have all along been listening to the idols in their heart. Not all that glitters is gold. Not all open doors are opened by God. If you really want the blessings of God in your life and home, you have to eradicate the voice of all the idols in your heart. Even if you are totally blind, as long as you depend on God for direction, His promises for your life will lead you to where you will find rest for your soul. I prophesy into your life that you will not miss your way in Jesus’ Name. Wherever God is taking you, you can rest assured that you are heading for a glorious destiny. He will lead you so clearly that you will be so sure of where you are going. He will lead you so convincingly that you can guarantee the outcome of your choice even before you embark on it. There is nothing as safe as allowing God to direct you in every sphere of life. If you hear well from Him, you will end well. Measure the expectations of your heart against the standard of Gods word. David, the great psalmist, here calls our attention to who and what God is, His attributes and actions; who and what we are in the light of His omnipotence and lavished blessings upon us. It is not unlikely that we often take all that we are enjoying for granted and never meditate on the source of our blessings and favour. How often do we praise God in appreciation of His goodness? The passage outlines the attributes of God as they touch on human frailty and our need of divine power to survive the challenges of our world. God is righteous and just, merciful and gracious, loving and faithful. He forgives our sins, heals our diseases, protects us from death, surrounds us with tender mercies and satisfies us with the good things of life. What a good God we have! We are challenged never to forget all His benefits. In our daily activities, the hustling and bustling of our cities and engagements in Christian service, we must always remember to praise God for all the wonderful blessings and mercies we receive from Him. THE WELL OF COMPASSION Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way (MATTHEW 15:32) Many pastors took turns to minister to a condemned criminal. They preached to him in an attempt to win him to Christ. But the condemned man was unmoved by their "powerful" preaching. At last, a layman visited the man. He entered the death row cell, sat on the camp bed with him, took him by the hand and said, "We are in a bad fix, aren't we?" For that gesture, the condemned criminal broke into tears and shortly after, yielded to Christ. Compassion prevailed. The man was in need of somebody who would understand and care. It is important to consider the attitude of Christ and His motivation for the miracle in our text. His statement in today's key verse is instructive. The people had had no regular meal through the three days they had been seeking Him in His solitude on the mountain. Christ's attitude just speaks volumes about our need to have compassion and empathy in our quest to win the unconverted to Christ. We must learn to feel for people in their plight. Our compassion must be deep enough to compel helpful action. Love and kindness are cardinal ingredients in a Christian's makeup. Compassionate action is a language people understand faster than religious jargons. Observe also that the feeding of the people was not the goal of the occasion - the people had continued with Christ for three days feeding on God's word. We must go beyond the satisfaction of the people's physical and material needs to meeting their spiritual needs. As you reflect on the response of Christ in today's text, think of what you can do to compassionately solve the spiritual and physical problems of people around you.
